Browser Works

Privacy Policy

This policy describes how Browser Works extensions handle data. It applies to Keep Awake, History Shortcut, History Extended, and Adblocker.

Data Collection and Use

Browser Works extensions collect anonymous usage data to improve functionality, monitor stability, and understand how the extensions are used. The data collected varies by extension, as described below.

  • History Shortcut collects anonymous usage analytics (install, update, button clicks, startup, error reports), generates random identifiers (UUIDs) per device and user profile, counts active devices, and sends periodic heartbeat signals to track active installations. History Shortcut also periodically checks for recommended extensions from the same developer.
  • Keep Awake stores local preferences and collects anonymous usage analytics similar to History Shortcut.
  • History Extended reads browsing history and optional page metadata locally to provide richer navigation. It also collects anonymous usage analytics similar to History Shortcut.
  • Adblocker filters requests and page elements locally to block ads and trackers. It also collects anonymous usage analytics similar to History Shortcut.

Data Transmitted to Third Parties

Browser Works extensions send anonymous analytics data to Google Analytics 4 (via the Measurement Protocol) to track usage events and error reports. The data sent includes:

  • Randomly generated user and device identifiers (UUIDs, not linked to any personal identity)
  • Extension version, install date, and update history
  • Browser name, browser version, and operating system
  • Browser language and screen resolution
  • Usage events: install, update, startup, button clicks, screen views
  • Error reports: error type and message from uncaught JavaScript exceptions (no personal data)
  • Device count: how many devices the extension is installed on within the same browser profile

This data is used solely to understand usage patterns, monitor extension stability, and prioritize improvements. Google's privacy policy applies to data processed by Google Analytics.

Data Transmitted to Browser Works Servers

Extensions send the following data to a first-party server (api.browser-works.com) to support extension operations:

  • Registration signals on install, update, and browser startup (includes device ID, extension version, browser language, operating system, and timezone)
  • Periodic heartbeat signals (device ID, extension version, browser version)
  • Extension recommendation checks (user ID, device ID, extension ID, and version)

No browsing history, page content, URLs visited, or personally identifiable information is transmitted to Browser Works servers.

Data Stored Locally

  • Randomly generated user ID (synced across devices via browser profile) and device ID (per browser installation)
  • Session identifier, install date, and last active date
  • Device registry for multi-device counting (pruned after 90 days of inactivity)
  • User preferences and settings
  • List of previously shown extension recommendations (to prevent duplicates)
  • Cached history records and page metadata (History Extended only)

Local data is stored via browser storage APIs and stays on your device (except for sync storage, which replicates across devices signed into the same browser profile).

Data Not Collected

  • Personally identifiable information (name, email, address)
  • Browsing history or URLs visited (not transmitted; History Extended reads history locally only)
  • Page content or website data
  • Health, financial, or authentication data
  • Personal communications
  • Location data
  • Keystrokes, mouse position, scroll behavior, or similar telemetry

Data Sharing

Browser Works shares anonymous analytics data with Google via Google Analytics 4 as described above. Browser Works does not sell, transfer, or share user data with any other third parties for advertising, profiling, or creditworthiness purposes.

Data Retention

Local identifiers and preferences persist until the extension is uninstalled. Device registry entries are automatically removed after 90 days of inactivity. Analytics data retained by Google Analytics follows Google's standard retention policies.

Policy Updates
